The South Wales Crucible

The South Wales Crucible consortium consists of world-leading universities, research centres of excellence, internationally significant firms and is supported by the Welsh Government and aligns with the Welsh City Deals. With a core geography rooted in South Wales, the reach of our consortium extends across all of Wales and benefits from strong links to a diverse range of national and international organisations.

In 2018 the South Wales Crucible consortium undertook a Science and Innovation Audit (SIA) on behalf of the UK Government Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, forming part of the third wave of SIAs.

The audit report can be found here.

The SIA process has brought a sharper focus to our partnership working, and this will be maintained over the coming years as we seek to tackle the important grand challenge areas discussed in our SIA report. By addressing these gaps in our offer, and seizing on some of the exciting growth opportunities that have emerged through our SIA process, we can make positive and lasting steps to help unlock our region’s, and by extension, the UK’s, full innovation-led growth potential.

“This is an exciting time for Universities in Wales. The core University members of our Science and Innovation Audit (SIA) South Wales Crucible consortium – Aberystwyth, Bangor, Cardiff and Swansea – recognise that we have a vital role to play in transforming the productivity performance of our region and we are constantly striving to make a positive difference at local, national and UK levels.”
